Alwi added that Gus Dur regrets the statements ofvarious people who say he has no intention of leavingthe palace. According to Alwi, Gus Dur needs timebefore leaving. “He will leave the palace withinthese two or three weeks,” Alwi said. He was alsoconvinced that President Megawati would not mind. “I’m sure that Gus Dur will leave the palace. If hedoesn't leave within two weeks, it will be in thethird week,” Alwi said.
Alwi declined to say whether Gus Dur would leave thepalace together with several Muslim scholars, which ishow he originally entered the place as a president.
Alwi also assured the press that Gus Dur would retainthe idealism of a moral reformer regardless of theimpeachment. “It means he can choose whether he’dlike to become an opposition figure or not,” Alwisaid.
Asked whether Gus Dur acknowledged Megawati’sinauguration as the new president, Alwi said,” It’snot necessary for Gus Dur to say that. Still, I’msure that he knows what’s going on. It does makesense.”
