Amien said that during the meeting they discussed thevice presidency as the last agenda of the MPR specialsession. “The political parties have agreed to vacatethe vice presidency until the situation calms down. So, we plan to suspend the special session until theholding of the MPR annual session, which will takeplace two months from now,” Amien said. Despite this,he says that many political party figures have lobbiedhim to settle the vice presidency now, during thespecial session.
The president was not fussed either way. “Thepresident said that as long as the mechanism iscarried out in accordance with the constitution, thosenominated as vice president are expected to cooperatewith her and to become a productive team,” Amien said.
Amien feared that a delay in the election of the newvice president might disturb President Megawati’sadministration. “Her position as a president might bedisturbed because of competition over the vacantposition of the vice president. She might not beunable to focus herself on settling economic problemssuch as the economic recovery and other problems,”Amien stated.
