TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Presidential spokesperson Yahya C. Staquf said that President Abdurrahman Wahid ordered some ministers and National Police chief deputy Comm. Gen. Chaeruddin Ismail to study the possibility of establishing a special court to examine the Trisakti, Semanggi I and Semanggi II incidents. At Trisakti incident, six students were killed, allegedly by security forces in the grounds of Trisakti University of Jakarta in May 1998. The shootings came during student protests calling for former president Soeharto's resignation. The Semanggi I and II incidents also refer to shootings of students during protests outside a special session of parliament during the transitional presidency of BJ Habibie. These demonstrations were protesting a plan to impose the Security Act to handle dissidents.

The president asked Chaeruddin to study all regulations to help make this action work. The law enforcement efforts of the House of Representatives (DPR) on the incidents, Staquf said, have drawn the president’s interest. He added that the president expected all human rights abusers to be legally processed.

Staquf could not confirm the make-up of the special court. “We’re yet to be sure on which mechanism to use,” Staquf said. The president considered the suggestion of issue a presidential decree on an ad hoc human rights trial as said by Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI) chairman caretaker Munir as an unclear alternative. At the moment the special trial alternative is deemed superior.
