5.2 Magnitude Quake Shakes Banda Sea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Banda Sea, the Maluku Islands on Saturday. It occurred at 04:00 am western Indonesia time, August 19.

The epicenter of the quake was at 6.25 south latitude and 128.13 east longitude. "Or 261 kilometers from southwest Maluku," Hary said in today’s press release.

The quake was 288 kilometers from Ambon, 322 kilometers from South Buru, Maluku, and 2,367 kilometers away from Jakarta.

Hary said that BMKG has yet to receive information on the casualty. “But we’re sure that the earthquake is not potential to tsunami,” he said.

The Banda Sea is located in the Maluku Islands and separated from the Pacific Ocean. There are hundreds of islands that are bordering with Buru Island, Ambon, Seram Island, West Sulawesi, Aru Islands, and Tanimbar Islands.
