TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia is in danger from AIDS bearing in mind the rapid transmission of the disease although there are as yet only a few cases. Up to September of this year, there are 3,924 cases of HIV and AIDS, including 1,685 HIV infected patients and 1,239 who tested positive for AIDS, said Minister of Health Achmad Sujudi at the State palace on Wednesday (19/11). He cited the fact that there are 100 new cases of HIV/AIDS each month in Jakarta. According to statistics, Sujudi said, HIV and AIDs cases in Indonesia could reach between 80,000 and 120,000.This includes people at risk, HIV infected patients and those suffering from AIDS, he added. In fact it is not too late for Indonesia to prevent the spread of AIDS if anti-AIDS campaigns are held intensively. Compared to other ASEAN countries, Indonesia is classified as a country with low cases of AIDS. The problem is that Indonesia has the largest population in this region.And AIDS cases have spread throughout Indonesia, from west to east, said Toha Muhaimin, from the Pelita Ilmu Foundation.
