TEMPO.CO, Kuala Lumpur – President Jokowi and eight state leaders attended the opening of the 26th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday, April 27, 2015.
Malaysian Premier Najib Razak said in his opening speech that this year would become a milestone for ASEAN member countries to realize a united community in late December.
“It is our collective task to formulate the document to replace the roadmap so as to establish the ASEAN community,” he said.
Razak said the summit would become a basis for ASEAN member countries on how to cement unity and boost integration in the next decade until 2025.
Nazib also underscored that the summit sought to accomplish good governance, higher living standards, continued development, women empowerment, and wider opportunities for the people in general within the ASEAN region.
President Joko Widodo is scheduled to return to Indonesia after the summit’s opening while Vice President Jusuf Kalla is slated to take part in the summit’s retreat session.
The 26th ASEAN Summit is held in two sessions: the plenary session in Kuala Lumpur and the retreat session in Langkawi, Kedah.
